Owned by Aegon, whose funds are now managed by Kames Capital, 55 Colmore Row is the former headquarters of law firm Wragge & Co. A Grade II listed building in a conservation area. We were engaged in late 2009 and worked in consultation with local groups and organisations to establish a strategy in preparation for Wragge’s planned surrender in 2014. The key task being to consider the future of the asset and how investment value could be added. We led an experienced team to secure detailed planning for a significant refurbishment; which was well supported by English Heritage, conservationists, and Birmingham Council. The scope of intervention involves restoration of the original Victorian features, stripping-out a plethora of recent additions - to create an office space which reflects the pioneering, innovative spirit that made Birmingham such a powerhouse in the first instance. Our design flooded the interior with natural daylight - and the magnificent internal 19th century Banking Hall is rediscovered, and brought back into use as a prestigious reception zone. At the top of the building, we have created an additional 6th floor, whose discreet modern styling is the perfect counterpoint to the ornate architecture below.
